new series! bc i am amused at the amount of bitchy and mean comments come out of the mouths of me and my friends, i decided i will be doing an ongoing set of digital pieces using these quotes. i haven’t done too much with my SPIFFY hand lettering lately, so i thought this was a good idea. i thought the name was even more clever. but i always think i’m more brilliant than others seem to. hahaha. enjoy! click to enlarge :D

*for the safety of the persons behind the quotes that will be used for the sake of art, i will not be disclosing the speaker’s information. :P

hi guysss! so i did this comic a while ago, while taking ivan brunetti’s cartooning class at columbia. (which i suggest taking, if you are a current student there. i suggest taking ANY class with ivan. he is THE BOMB DIGGITY and will improve your work. i guarantee it.)

anywho, so ivan contacted me about putting some of my work in Columbia Magazine, and this is the strip he asked for, along with my famously depressing “I heard a knock at the door…” comic (which you can find in an earlier blog entry or on my website.

this one was originally done in just black and white. as you can see, i added some color.

i know the text is hard to read on this one, so i typed out the text from each panel (find it below the image). enjoy! (also, click to see the image larger on my flickr… but you may still need to read the text here.

First Row:
1. my grandma like sto sit by the front window… all day.
2. she reads local filipino newspapers and pop culture mags from the philippines.
3. she makes daily phone calls to the philippines, also by the window.
4. sometimes she falls asleep and my aunt has to move her to wake her to move her to the bed.

Second Row:
1. the back “sun room” was built a few years ago when the house was renovated.
2. at family parties, me and my cousins play monopoly in this room.
3. on the corner table are statues of virgin mary and some other saint. they hold prayers in here, too, like on death anniversaries.
4. there’s a display case in the sun room with easter egg collectibles and christmas cards from the white house. oh, and christmas ornaments, too.

Third Row:
1. in the kitchen there’s a fish tank with three huge gold fish.
2. one morning, my cousin woke to find only two.
3. the third fish has somehow found its way onto the floor.
4. he was still alive so they dropped him back in the tank.

Fourth Row:
1. in the backyard, my aunt and uncle keep a beautiful garden.
2. my uncle smokes in the yard.
3. one time he farted.
4. the neighbor next door thought it was her dog, monty.

Fifth Row:
1. my grandma kept her sewing machine in the basement when i was little.
2. she kept her box of sequins and beads under her sewing table.
3. white, purple, shiny, sparkly…
4. i loved playing with the fabrics and ribbons and sequins.

Sixth Row:
1. there’s this drawer thing in the living room.
2. when i was little and used to live there, i would hide in the bigger compartments. i would try to scare my mom.
3. the top drawer has my uncle’s marlboro points, scissors, pens, and other random things like that.
4. in the other drawers, my aunt keeps her stash of wrapping paper, ribbons, gift bags, etc. there’s always a birthday or something.

in an effort to conserve money & catch up on some rest… i am not where you would normally find me on a monday night (rehab mondays @ deb… yes i know, how very “hipster” of me. but hey- an hour of free drinks & $2 beers all night? plus great dancing music? pshhh… i’m kind of regretting not being there right now). however, because i am not out enjoying my youth- YOU GUYS get a blog entry and a few new works up on angelagpestano.com. so go check those out!

in other news, i’ve eaten a lot of broccoli this week.

our assisgnment was to take take text (a narrative, poem, song, etc…) and create a 18×24 poster incorporating text, illustration, type as image, and/or illustration as type.

i chose to use the lyrics to the song “Parentheses” by The Blow.

::update:: i also wanted to add that we had the choice to either use a typeface or do it by hand. i chose to do it by hand because i have issues with being fully happy with any font i choose for anything. i originally had pieces drawn out in pencil that i was going to ink and scan… but i ended up just doing everything straight into the comp using my wacom tablet.

as fellow illustrators have expressed… color can be quite a road bump when working on a piece. i know a lot of people who stick to only black and white or very limited color pallettes because they FEAR color. haha. so i thought i would share the website:

kuler.adobe.com

the link is also posted to the left, in my link list.

ENJOY! and you’re welcome.
